Love Story Post 1
"We started out as friends like David and Rebecca, then something awful happened and for years I couldn't get past it. Now we never would. We could in my story though. I could set up obstacles to love, just like in real life - and then, unlike real life, I could knock them down. Making every piece slide into place for my characters, writing them an unrealistic happy ending, gave me a rush and made me high." (9)
In the first chapter of the book Erin is in her university English class preparing to read one of her stores that she wrote. It is a story similar to hers but with a chance at a better ending, one she never got. This quote is significant to the novel because it shows that she is real, unlike most characters written in books. Her 'love' story didn't go the way she planned - the desired way. But she could pretend to have the life she wanted through her writing. It was some sort of closure for her to write them but instead of having them end the same way her real life story ended she gives them a happier end, a way of how she would of liked her life to go. A 'what if' that would never get answered. But right as she begins to read her story, it just so happens that the boy from who the story is about shows up in her classroom...
It's realistic, sometimes there are obstacles in our lives and things don't go the way we plan. Love might not work out the way we plan and people don't try. Sometimes writing helps me and other people to express their feelings about it. Writing stories about how your life might be or could turn out is kind of like a day dream. It makes you smile and be happy for a while but that is an unrealistic view and when we turn back to reality it's much more painful.
As Erin get's prepared to read her story in front of her class, the mystery boy who inspired her story shows up in her class. That could be a problem for her... Will Erin still read her story to the class? If she does what will the boy say? The beginning of the chapter things seem to be going well but when she realizes who the boy at the door is you can feel the tension that she is feeling even though you are reading a book.

I think changing the endings to her own life through writing can be both positive and negative. By doing this, it gives her an outlet, or a way to escape her real life, but it can also leave her feeling depressed and inadequate after she realizes that it's not real life again.

the character takes herself away from reality to escape into a land of fantasy to get away from the problems it maybe facing.
ReplyDeleteChanging the end of her story to a more desirable ending that what was actually experienced probably created a good love story. However, I agree that it would hurt a bit to write that and then to face the reality of it actually not ending that way may be more painful. At the end of the day though, we need to face the fact that no love story has a perfect ending like we see on TV and read in books right away. Those stories do make us go into a state of fantasy and dreams; however, in reality every day is a constant struggle and most people have to go through a bad relationship to get to the fairytale one. Therefore, I think she should have left the story without changing the ending because it would have made a more realistic story and I believe more people in her class would have been able to relate to it and know that they are not alone.
